Journey back in time over 1,000 years! Located near the town of San Ignacio in the Cayo District (2 hour drive), is the ancient Mayan site of Xunantunich, an excellent example of ancient Mayan architecture. To access Xunantunich, we will cross the Mopan River on a hand cranked ferry. Once across the river, we will take a short walk up to the visitors center and on to the ruins where you will have the opportunity to explore the site and climb to the top of 'El Castillo' which is believed to be one of the tallest manmade structures in Belize built by the Ancient Maya, which offers panoramic views of Belize and Guatemala. Hop back into the van with a stop at Sleeping Giant Rainforest Lodge and enjoy the Sunday special and then depart on a guided mountain hike to the top where you will find a gazebo which will allow you to have a very scenic view of the Maya Mountains and of course the Sleeping Giant which is formed by the mountains itself. Hike back down and into the van and back to your resort.
